The Playful Spirit of Catalonia

Our cultural exchange participant Dajana is writing to us from Salou, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Catalonia, where she’s been living for a month. Here’s what she had to say about her experience so far.

My first impression was amazing, starting with the family I’m staying with. Their connection with each other, the way they treat their children, and the way they welcomed me like a true family member—it was all heartwarming. They’re cheerful, full of laughter, dancing, music, games, and fun. And then there’s the setting: long sandy beaches, perfect weather, palm trees, sunrises and sunsets… every single day for three months. Do I need to add anything else?

On weekdays, once I finish up my tasks with the kids, I usually head to the beach to enjoy the sunset with an ice cream or a cocktail in hand. I love wandering down little hidden streets and discovering quirky cafés.

My weekends are free, and I try to make the most of them by visiting nearby towns, tasting all kinds of food, and meeting new people. Sometimes I go exploring solo, sometimes I tag along with the family.

What I’ve loved the most is getting to experience the spirit of Spain and Catalonia in the most authentic way possible—by living with a real Catalan family. That’s something I’ve always dreamed of.

I’d recommend this cultural exchange program to anyone who wants to broaden their horizons, step out of their comfort zone, and make lifelong memories and friendships. No vacation can compare to this kind of experience, where you get to know the culture, language, people, and traditions from the inside out.
