Magical Experience – A Cultural Exchange in Italy

Our cultural exchange participant in Italy, Anastasija, is writing to us from Florence, where she spent three months. Read more about her experience below.

My stay in Florence as an au pair was an unforgettable blend of culture, art, and history. The city captivated me with its stunning architecture, museums, and charming streets that breathe history. Florence, the capital of Tuscany, is the heart of Renaissance art. I got to enjoy masterpieces by Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, and other great artists. I wandered through narrow streets, feeling the spirit of the Middle Ages at every turn. The city itself is mesmerizing, with its rich cultural heritage and incredible food. Living with an Italian family allowed me to improve my Italian, learn about their customs and way of life, and experience something no tourist ever could. Their home truly felt like my own. Besides Florence, I explored other Italian cities and thoroughly enjoyed the country’s cultural diversity. Siena won me over with its medieval squares and its spectacular cathedral. Arezzo, the birthplace of Petrarch and the filming location of the famous movie Life is Beautiful, looked like a fairytale under the glow of Christmas lights and decorations.

Beyond the beauty of the cities, I indulged in the flavors of Italian cuisine in Bologna. Bergamo fascinated me with its contrast between the old and new city, and with its breathtaking panoramic views. Milan, the fashion capital of Italy, offers the perfect mix of modern life and historical landmarks. Venice, the city on water, left a lasting impression with its canals, bridges, and that magical carnival vibe. I also visited Padua, a city rich in history and scientific heritage, whose beautiful squares completely charmed me. Art and history defined my days in Florence, and traveling through different cities and regions helped me get to know Italy in a deeper, more well-rounded way – a country where every corner tells a story of the past.

To future participants, she says:
