Exploring a Picturesque Town – Cultural Exchange in Italy

Our cultural exchange participant in Italy, Nina, writes to us from Fano—where the ancient Via Flaminia meets the Adriatic Sea—where she’s been living for a month now. Read more about her experience below.

I think this program is beautifully organized. The coordinators were there for me every step of the way—both before and after I arrived in Italy. I instantly fell in love with this little town where everyone gets around by bike. It’s full of history and has gorgeous beaches. The host family made me feel welcome from day one, which honestly wasn’t hard—people here are truly lovely, and the kids are incredibly smart and open.

Every weekday, I spend a few hours with the kids—whether we’re heading to the beach, the park, a playroom, or just hanging out at home. On top of that, thanks to the family, I’ve made some friends here and we usually meet up a few times a week for dinner. On weekends, I like to check out nearby tourist spots—or simply sunbathe, sip coffee, and wander around the city.

So far, my most memorable experience has been a spontaneous trip to Verona. I managed to coordinate everything with the family, and I’m so glad I did—it was worth it.

To future participants, she says:

I truly believe that opportunities for cultural exchange should never be missed. This program is a special chance to get to know a culture from a perspective that’s far from the typical tourist experience. Italians know how to live—and there’s no doubt that every participant will return home with a brand new outlook on life.
