Feeling at Home from Day One – Cultural Exchange in the USA

Our cultural exchange participant Milana writes to us from Juneau, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Alaska’s Inside Passage, where she’ll be spending the next year. Read on to learn more about her journey so far.

From the very first day, I’ve felt completely comfortable and relaxed. I was warmly welcomed and instantly accepted without any hesitation. The town where my host family lives is absolutely beautiful. The nature here is stunning, and there’s so much to see and explore. We live in a peaceful part of town, and our house is right next to the Mendenhall River—which I absolutely love. I’ve also met the rest of the extended family, and I already feel like one of them.

I spend my free time with the family, friends, or other girls who are also here through the program, just from different countries. We go out and explore nature—there’s so much to take in, especially since Alaska is known for its breathtaking landscapes. Every day so far has been full of beautiful impressions and new experiences. Most days since I arrived have been rainy, but sunny and warmer days are just around the corner, which means lots of outdoor adventures ahead—and I can’t wait.

What I appreciate the most is that everything that was promised—by the agency and by the family—has been delivered. We spoke a few times via video call before I arrived, and I was instantly impressed by how warm, positive, and kind they were. I felt that same energy the moment I arrived here.

I’m incredibly happy that I ended up in Alaska because I’m someone who loves the outdoors and being surrounded by nature. I’ve tried their local food, sampled all kinds of fish, and started learning about the way of life and customs here. What really stood out to me is how friendly, welcoming, and talkative people are. Everyone lights up when they hear I came all the way from Serbia—it’s always a fun conversation starter.

Her message to future participants:

To every young person out there who has the desire and motivation to travel, explore something new, discover the beauty of another country, and spend time with kids—this program is exactly what you’re looking for. You even get to choose the state you’d like to go to, which I think is a huge plus. All you need is the will and a bit of courage, and I truly believe it’s something everyone should try at least once.
