Pamela, one of our cultural exchange participants in Spain, wrote to us from beautiful Castilla-La Mancha, where she’s been enjoying life in the historic city of Toledo for the past few weeks. Here’s more about her experience:
At first, things were a bit challenging—kids need time to warm up to someone new—but now everything’s going great. As for Toledo, it’s a small city that you can explore in just a day, but it has its special charm. So, if you’re a fan of smaller towns and cities, Toledo is the perfect choice. And the bonus? Madrid is only 40 minutes away by bus! As the capital, it offers endless things to see and do—parks, museums, markets, universities, restaurants, and other cultural highlights. Oh, and make sure to try churros—I’m obsessed with them!
In my free time, I usually relax by the pool, listen to music, take a walk around town, or grab a drink somewhere. I love cooking, so I make lunch almost every day for myself and the family I’m living with. I’ve also started taking Spanish lessons!
And her message to future participants:
Definitely go to Spain—it’s absolutely beautiful. The people are incredibly kind, and it’s a great place to really learn the language. You’ll also make amazing new connections and friendships. The only thing I’d emphasize is this: choose your host family carefully because that’s the most important part of the whole experience.
