Living the Spanish Way – A Cultural Exchange in Spain

Maja, one of our cultural exchange participants in Spain, writes to us from El Rompido, a charming town near Seville. Here’s what she had to say about her experience so far:

A few years ago, I stumbled upon a story written by a girl who had gone on a cultural exchange in Spain. Half-jokingly, I told my best friend, We should do this too. A year ago, that joke turned into a plan—and then into a decision.

Some of my friends were thrilled about the idea, some weren’t quite sure, but one thing was clear: all you need for something like this is the will and the courage to step into a new culture, meet new people, and start speaking a whole new language. We even asked the program coordinators if my friend and I could be placed nearby—and they made it happen. Throughout the entire process, the team from the Center stood by us.

I’m currently in El Rompido, a coastal town close to Seville. During my very first week, I met so many young people—some spoke English, some didn’t, but those moments helped me loosen up and slowly start speaking Spanish. It’s a small, family-oriented place, but I’ve managed to find a great group of friends. I felt at home right away—people here are incredibly warm, friendly, and always willing to help.

The host family I’m staying with is amazing. They’re kind, and helpful, and have welcomed me as one of their own. I’ve been traveling with them, discovering new places, and spending lots of time at the beach and by the pool. They have four children, all very well-behaved, and I’ve built a strong bond with them quickly. I felt like part of the family within the first few days.

In my free time, I hang out with friends I’ve made here or spend weekends with my best friend. I also found a local gym that I go to regularly. Any other spare time I get, I use for exploring nearby cities and towns.

What I love the most about this program is that it truly gives you the chance to learn a new language and culture in a meaningful way. I’ve proven to myself that I can rely on myself, adapt to a new environment, and grow through it.

Her message to future participants:

This kind of decision takes courage—but believe me, it’s worth it. This journey has brought me invaluable experiences. Beyond the friendships and new faces, it’s taught me to trust myself, face new situations with confidence, and move through life a little braver. This is a chance to get to know yourself better, dive into another culture, and truly live like a local. And trust me—it’s nothing like being a tourist for a few days. It’s so much more.
