This Is the Experience of a Lifetime – Cultural Exchange in China

Katarina, a participant in the cultural exchange program with China, writes to us from Beijing to share what has clearly become a life-changing adventure. Here’s what she had to say:

“A sunny and clear day,” they told me upon arrival—apparently a rare thing in Beijing. But I took it as a sign from the universe, a reward from the cosmos, and held onto the hope that all my days here would be just as bright.

When I arrived at my host family’s home, I was welcomed by people I can now proudly call lifelong friends. Their generosity and care have left such a strong impression on me—two words that perfectly describe this Chinese family I’ve now been living with for a month.

Yes, the weather is unpredictable, and yes, there is some pollution, but it feels more like a soft mist—and those days are perfect for sipping tea the traditional kung fu way or taking peaceful walks from the National Museum to the Military Museum, which I’d recommend to absolutely everyone. It left me speechless.

And as it goes, we spent the hottest days climbing the Great Wall of China and wandering through the Forbidden City, where I even had a chance to sing—and realize just how mysterious and magnificent China truly is. It’s a country full of secrets and beauty, one that everyone should take time to explore at least once.

Katarina also reflected on the people she’s met:

I’m constantly touched by how people try to connect, even if they don’t speak English well. They’re always willing to help, and even adjust their table manners or habits just to make me feel more comfortable. But honestly, none of it bothers me—I’m embracing every part of this adventure.

I’m living the life I chose—and I’m loving it.

Oh, and let me tell you about Jia Ying, the little girl I’m caring for. She’s like a tiny version of me—a “mini me.” I’ve found my Chinese soulmate, and spending time with her has made this experience even more special.

This really is the experience of a lifetime. And if you ask me, you’d be—well, let’s just say a little crazy not to dive into this kind of adventure.
