Ivana, one of our cultural exchange participants in Spain, spent three months in Can Picafort, a charming tourist town in the north of Mallorca. Here’s what she had to say about her experience:
I spent three months in Spain, living in the northern part of Mallorca, in a small seaside town called Can Picafort. I stayed in an apartment just two minutes from the beach. The sea in Mallorca is stunning, and some of the beaches I visited were truly breathtaking—like something out of a dream. The whole island is just gorgeous!
Ivana described her experience as both wonderful and enriching. “The support from the Center for Affirmation and Development (CAR) was incredibly warm and helpful. I’m quite an outgoing person, so I ended up meeting lots of great people. Since it’s a touristy area, people are generally very open and cheerful.”
She stayed with a divorced family and lived with the children’s father. “I had my beautiful room with a comfy bed and big balcony doors. Even though I lived with a man, it was a completely comfortable and positive experience, and I had a lovely relationship with both parents. I also felt safe and supported thanks to the structure of the program.
The kids she cared for were “adorable and full of energy,” though she admits there were some challenges too—something she sees as a natural part of working with children.
In my free time, I worked online on a personal project, explored different beaches, and spent time with friends I met there. I also studied Spanish, went on walks, did some running, and soaked up the sea. One of the highlights was getting to visit Gran Canaria for four days—it was truly magical!
Her message to future participants:
This program is such a beautiful opportunity, especially if you approach it with patience and an open heart. Spending time with children can be fun and rewarding—but it also comes with its challenges. That’s why I believe a genuine love for little humans is essential for this experience.
It’s not just about childcare—it’s a deeply human experience, one that teaches you about respect, empathy, and how to truly listen to others.
Ivana highly recommends this program to anyone dreaming of living in another country, learning a new language, meeting people from around the world, and spending meaningful time with children:
Every cultural exchange I’ve done has helped me grow—more independence, more responsibility, new friendships, language skills, and greater confidence. It’s priceless.😊
