Anđela, one of our cultural exchange participants in Spain, writes to us from Valencia—a city where old-world charm meets modern innovation. Here’s what she had to say about her experience so far:
This program is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in another culture, learn about local habits, and experience a new way of life. I’m currently living with a family in Valencia and taking care of two young kids, aged four and two. The family has hosted participants through this program for several years now, so they’re very familiar with how everything works and know how to include me in their daily rhythm. Some days are busier than others, depending on the kids’ activities, but overall, we’ve developed a great relationship and I truly enjoy spending time with them.
Valencia is a dream. As the third largest city in Spain, it has endless things to do and explore. Public transportation is super efficient, and the city is made for cycling—it’s well-marked and easy to navigate, which is why so many people here use bikes to get around.
During her free time, Anđela loves wandering the city and checking out all the local landmarks:
I’ve met people from all over the world and enjoy spending time with them. On weekends, I take longer trips to discover even more of Spain. So far, I’ve visited smaller towns near Valencia, explored the mountains, and even spent a weekend in Mallorca.
She’s also a big fan of the beach, biking, and staying active:
Valencia is perfect for young people—there’s so much going on and the nightlife is amazing.
What she’s loved the most?
The chance to live in Spain, experience the culture firsthand, learn the language, and try all the delicious traditional food. My host family goes out of their way to introduce me to local customs, dishes, and cultural sites. I’m really glad Valencia ended up being the city I live in—it’s full of young people, many of whom are also doing cultural exchange or internships.
Her message to future participants:
If you’re thinking about it—go for it! Spain is absolutely beautiful and offers so many amazing experiences. Just make sure to choose a host family that feels right for you, because your relationship with them can shape your entire stay.
