A Journey That Changed My Life – Cultural Exchange in China

From the vibrant city of Guangzhou, Jovana, a participant in the “Journey to the East” program, shares her impressions of a life-changing adventure that took her far from home—and even further out of her comfort zone.

If someone had told me I’d be living in China for three months, I never would’ve believed them. And yet—here I am. Living a life completely different from the one I left behind.

One of Jovana’s first impressions?

It felt like stepping into a parallel universe, people drink hot water, stroll around in pajamas, tea replaces coffee, and salad? It’s boiled!

Surprisingly, she adapted quickly:

I’m already wondering if I’ll go back to drinking cold water—or if I’ll resist the urge to cook my greens when I return home.

She describes her host family as “an absolute dream.” Despite being a foreigner, she says they’ve been understanding and thoughtful from the very start.

I’ve been lucky to land in a musically gifted family, which means I’ve had the chance to play piano, violin, saxophone, and even the flute!

As for the children?

They’re wonderful—curious, full of energy, and always game for my crazy ideas (which, admittedly, isn’t always a good thing). I’ve grown so attached to them, it feels like leaving part of my heart behind.

Guangzhou, like most Chinese cities, offers endless things to explore: From serene Buddhist temples and lush parks perfect for unwinding, to majestic mountains and fun-filled amusement parks, every day brings something new.

Through this experience, Jovana’s also met people from all over the world—a gift she describes as immeasurable.

Honestly, I don’t know how I’ll handle leaving China. Who knows… maybe I’ll come back?
