Jovana, one of our cultural exchange participants in Spain, is writing to us from Bilbao, where she’s currently living. Read on to learn more about her experience:
Coming to the Basque Country, the northernmost region of Spain has been such an interesting experience—it’s a unique place, not as well-known as the south. Bilbao is one of the largest cities in the region, with around half a million people, but getting around is super easy. The city has great public transport—buses, a metro, and a tram—and it’s also easy to rent a scooter or bike. The city center is well-connected and manageable. I’d recommend visiting—it’s different but still feels unmistakably Spanish.
In her free time, Jovana enjoys wandering the city, and visiting museums and libraries, and she’s planning a few trips to nearby towns like San Sebastián.
I’ve fallen for the architecture, the food, the language, and this incredible opportunity to experience a whole new culture. Be sure to try the local wines, craft beers, and pintxos—the small bites that this area is famous for.
Her message to future participants:
This is a fantastic opportunity to experience life in a foreign country at almost no cost. Just a heads-up—make sure you read the contract carefully before signing anything, and don’t be afraid to ask the family directly what your day-to-day schedule would look like and what they expect from you. Sometimes expectations can grow, so it’s good to be clear from the start.
For me, Spain has always been a dream—and this is the first time that dream has come true. I hope to come back again, next time maybe to the south, since the north is pretty cold and rainy this time of year. I’d recommend visiting the Basque Country in summer or early autumn.
