Maja spent two months in Italy through a cultural exchange program, and here’s what she had to say about her experience:
When I first heard about the cultural exchange program and decided to apply, I knew right away I wanted to go to Italy. At first, I imagined myself in one of the big cities—but I ended up in a tiny village with only 3,000 residents called La Morra. I chose it because I figured I’d have more chances to visit Italy’s famous cities on my own someday, but probably not a small place like this in the Cuneo province of Piedmont.
The family I stayed with had three kids—two school-aged girls and a four-year-old boy. I liked them immediately when we met over Skype, and we talked everything through before I arrived, including what my responsibilities would be. There were no surprises, no issues. I also loved that they lived in a house with a big backyard and had two dogs. The whole region is famous for wine and winemaking, so no matter where you look, you’re surrounded by rolling vineyards. I was especially amazed when I got to my room and saw that my balcony view included not only the vineyards—but Mont Blanc in the distance.
I started taking Italian lessons right away, and I met so many girls from different parts of the world in the class. I usually spent my mornings with them when I wasn’t helping out with the kids. On my days off, I explored the region, and the family let me use their car whenever I needed it—which made getting around so much easier.
I developed a really strong bond with the parents and the children. We could talk openly about everything, and I truly believe I got lucky with the family I was matched with. One thing I’d definitely recommend to future participants is to ask all your questions before you go—just like I did. That way, you avoid misunderstandings and everyone knows what to expect.
Looking back now, I’m really happy I chose this place and this family. They went out of their way to make me feel welcome, taught me so much about Italian life, culture, and history—and gave me an experience I’ll never forget.
