Between the Sea and the Mountains of Spain

Our cultural exchange participant Jelena, who is soon wrapping up her stay, writes to us from Tarragona—a coastal city near Barcelona—where she’s been living for a month and a half.

This program is incredibly well designed and organized for anyone looking to become more independent and get to know a new country and culture uniquely. From day one, my host family welcomed me as one of their own. I met their extended (and quite large!) family and many of their friends—all while enjoying amazing food and an even better atmosphere. I’ve had the rare opportunity to explore two beautiful regions of Spain: Tarragona, with its stunning beaches and pine forests, and later Ger, a mountain town on the border of France and Andorra, known for its ski resorts. I’ve been trying to soak up the diversity between these two landscapes—between the sea and the mountains.

During the week, I usually spend my free time getting to know the city better and exploring the surrounding beaches. Tarragona is full of historical landmarks, and even after spending quite some time here, there’s always something new to discover. On the other hand, Ger is a charming mountain town with so much history, and it’s been a joy getting to know its unique character.

On weekends, I travel with other exchange participants to explore nearby Spanish towns.

What impressed me the most is how much I’ve improved my Spanish communication skills and the chance to really observe what everyday life is like here, not just as a tourist passing through, but as a true member of a family. I’ve had the freedom to organize my own time and truly enjoy it.

My message to anyone thinking about joining this program is simple: don’t hesitate. Take the chance to learn, grow, discover a new language, and build meaningful friendships. This is one of those priceless life experiences you’ll carry with you forever.
