Dijana is currently soaking up the vibrant atmosphere of Castro Urdiales, a charming coastal town in northern Spain, where she’s staying with a host family she connected with from the very first conversation. Here’s what drew her to the program and what she wants future participants to know.
This program is a fantastic opportunity to explore and truly get to know the country you’ve been dreaming about. My host family is genuinely amazing. We communicate in a mix of Spanish and English (Spanglish!), and we all try to make each other feel comfortable. From our first call, it just clicked between us. They’re kind, laid-back, and open-minded. I’ve only been here ten days, and they’ve already introduced me to their extended family and friends.
Castro is such a beautiful place. Right now, the “Semana Grande” is happening, so the town is buzzing with festivals and events. There’s so much to do and see, from historical landmarks to the lively fiestas. And if I ever feel like a change of scenery, Bilbao is just a short 30-minute bus ride away.
In my free time, I wander through the city and try to discover its every corner. When the weather’s nice, I head to the beach with a good book or relax by the pool. I’ve also been taking quick trips to Bilbao with a friend who’s staying in a nearby town. And of course, I’m making an effort to learn as much Spanish as I can.
What’s amazed me the most is how warm and welcoming everyone has been. Even though most people aren’t fluent in English, we still manage to understand each other. People here are incredibly open and kind, and my host family has been nothing short of wonderful.
To anyone thinking about applying—go for it! This is such a valuable opportunity to experience life in a new country and immerse yourself in its culture and daily rhythms.
