A Trip to Spain? – One of the Best Decisions of My Life

Jelena decided that after finishing university, it was finally time to get to know the country that had always drawn her in, but that she’d never had the chance to truly experience. After signing up and completing all the paperwork, she set off for Spain. Here’s her story.

I’d known about the cultural exchange program for quite a while and had read all kinds of stories from other participants. Eventually, I decided to apply myself, and I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Right now I’m in Spain, and I still can’t believe I’ve only got a month left. It feels like I just arrived yesterday… This was love at first sight. The country just pulls you in—its language, its culture, the people, and all the incredible energy they radiate. It’s impossible to describe—it’s something you simply have to experience.

The host family I’m with is amazing. They welcomed me like they’d known me forever, and I immediately felt like part of the family, which is the point of the whole experience: to integrate into your new environment. I’ve been placed with three boys (ages fourteen, twelve, and five), and since the older two speak English (and the youngest understands quite a bit), everything has gone so smoothly. Of course, kids will be kids—mischief included—but with a little patience and understanding, everything works out just fine. The family is always there if I have any questions or need advice.

In my free time, I make the most of every moment to travel. I’ve met a lot of other girls through the program, and we’re constantly planning new activities together—there’s no room for boredom.

This whole experience has been incredible, and I wholeheartedly recommend both the Center for Affirmation and Development and this program to anyone thinking about it.
