Sandra, one of our cultural exchange participants, writes to us from Tres Cantos—one of the greenest cities in Spain, located just outside the beautiful capital of Madrid. Here’s what she had to say about her experience so far:
My first impression was one of excitement upon arrival. The first week or two were a bit tough—getting used to a new environment, speaking only a foreign language, and feeling a bit lonely—but now things are much easier. I’ve gotten the hang of the city and public transportation, and I no longer feel like a stranger.
The host family has been great—they welcomed me warmly and we get along well. We do our best to support each other whenever something unexpected comes up. Of course, it’s a bit unusual living in someone else’s home, but I wouldn’t say I feel like an outsider. It’s a beautiful thing to share your knowledge and traditions with the family and the people around you. I also enjoy telling the kids stories about Serbia and my childhood.
During my first month, I tried to meet as many people as possible, explore the area, and find great spots for local food. I’ve visited several museums and even took part in a paella and sangria-making workshop.
What I’ve enjoyed most is how this experience has opened my eyes—giving me a new perspective on the world and on people. I’ve also started learning some truly valuable life lessons along the way.
Her message to future participants:
I’d recommend that future participants be ready for a very emotional and sometimes turbulent period while adjusting to a new country. There will be a mix of feelings—but go into it with an open mind, ready to embrace a new culture and new friendships. I honestly believe it’s something every young person should experience.
Even when you feel lonely, push yourself to meet other young people in your free time. Make the most of your time here—you won’t regret it!
