Aleksandra sends warm greetings from Madrid, where she’s currently participating in a cultural exchange program. Here’s what she had to share:
Yes, I wish the title of this story could’ve been different. My name is Aleksandra, and I want to send a big hello to all future CAR candidates considering the cultural exchange program. Let me start by asking you something—have you ever wondered if dreams really can become reality? If not, or if you think it’s impossible, I’m here to tell you—you’re not dreaming big enough!
What turns a dream into reality? I’d say desire—a strong, burning desire. I speak from personal experience because I once had a dream that felt out of reach, and today, it’s nearly fulfilled. That dream? Living in Spain.
As someone who’s always loved languages, culture, and traditions, I couldn’t resist the idea of joining this program. I first came across CAR’s “Discover Spain” exchange on social media, and I just knew it was meant for me. After a successful interview, the process of creating my profile and finding a host family began. It took a few months, and as the departure day approached, so did waves of bad news about COVID-19 from around the world. Of course, I was scared. I still am, a little. But the desire to stay and the belief that everything would eventually be okay outweighed my fear.
Sadly, I haven’t yet had the chance to explore much, since I only recently arrived. But the important part? I’m not alone. Alongside my amazing coordinator (huge shoutout and thank you), I can honestly say I feel right at home here. From the moment I saw the smiling faces of my host family waiting for me at the Madrid airport, I knew I’d made the right choice. Even now, as we all stay indoors 24/7 and follow safety measures, they’ve made sure I never feel isolated. We’re finding ways to have fun and bond, and I genuinely feel like part of the family.
Sure, we can’t wander the city streets right now, but we’re holding on to hope that things will get better soon. And until then, as someone living in one of the hardest-hit areas, I just want to tell future participants, if you stay calm, follow your coordinator’s advice, and stick to the safety guidelines, there’s nothing to panic about.
One last thing: I didn’t fully realize how much a program like this could help me grow, both personally and professionally. Now that I do, I can say without hesitation that I’m exactly where I need to be. I believe in a better tomorrow, and more importantly, I believe in myself. And believing in yourself—that’s the first step toward success, isn’t it?
So here’s my message to all of you out there: live your dream without fear—just like I’m doing right now!
