A Step Into New Adventures – Cultural Exchange in Italy

Our cultural exchange participant in Italy, Irena, spent three months in Vicenza, a city known for its elegant buildings designed by 16th-century architect Andrea Palladio. Read more about her experience below.

The first few days were stressful for me. I thought I wouldn’t be able to handle it, and I was constantly worried about making a mistake. When it came time to drive, fear completely took over, and I didn’t even dare to try for two days. But trust me—those feelings pass. You just can’t let fear win.

The family helped me a lot with settling in—they’re truly wonderful. They were so patient with me while I figured out what to do, where to go, and how to manage everything. Within four days, I had already learned it all. A month into my stay, they’d grown so close to my heart that I genuinely felt like I belonged there. Every day was different, every day was filled with smiles, and that’s something I loved. They were always there for me, no matter what I needed.

As for the city—Vicenza is beautiful. It’s small, cozy, and super charming. There’s so much to see, and the cafés are lovely. People here are a bit more reserved than back home in Serbia, but I’ve already gotten used to it.

I met a few people outside the house too, so I often go out with them for coffee, dinner, or just a walk around town. I’ve also taken trips to nearby cities—so far, I’ve visited Bassano del Grappa (a small town near Vicenza), Milan, and Venice.

What I love most? Italian cuisine.  Just kidding—though the food really is amazing. The truth is, I love change and meeting new people. This program was the perfect opportunity for me because it helped me a lot with improving my Italian, which I need for university. I also really enjoy this kind of lifestyle—meeting new people and finally getting the chance to visit cities I wouldn’t have been able to before.

To future participants, she says:

Don’t be afraid—take that step forward. This could be the opportunity that changes your life. It’s worth the risk, because this is a truly beautiful experience, and I promise you won’t regret it.
