An Everyday Adventure – Cultural Exchange in the USA

Our cultural exchange participant Amina writes to us from Newcastle, WA, where she’ll be spending the next year. Here’s more about her experience so far.

The Center for Affirmation and Development truly made my dreams come true! I’ve always been someone who loves to travel, work with children, meet new people, and explore new cultures—and going to the U.S. has always been my dream. This organization made all of that possible! The city of Newcastle and its surroundings are breathtaking. This place offers everything you could wish for—and more! I’m living with a loving, caring family who welcomed me with open arms and made me feel like one of their own. Working with children is a daily adventure—you never know what to expect, and it’s never boring.

I spend most of my free time in nature, exploring the city, reading, hitting the gym, and on weekends, I like to visit nearby cities, go to games with friends, or simply enjoy the beautiful surroundings. It’s hard to pick just one thing I’ve liked the most because the program offers so many great aspects—from making new friends to traveling, to all the support, and getting to know a new culture. But if I had to choose something truly special, it would be the host family I live with and the love they’ve shown me.

When it comes to working with our team, Amina says:

Preparing for the exchange and my arrival in the U.S. was incredibly smooth because the coordinators at the Center for Affirmation and Development were there for me every step of the way. They were kind, and helpful, always ready to give advice, explain everything in detail, and answer every question I had—even when I had a lot of them. I felt supported throughout the entire preparation process, and I still feel that support now. Leaving home for a year in a foreign country isn’t easy, so it means the world to me knowing I can always turn to my coordinators and count on them being there.

Her message to future participants:

To anyone considering this—yes, moving to a foreign country can be intimidating and it’s a big step, but it’s worth it. Every moment is an adventure, and this exchange has given me an experience I’ll never forget. If you’re someone who loves to travel, meet people, discover new cultures, learn a new language, and work with children—this program is definitely for you! I couldn’t be happier. I honestly don’t think I could’ve found a better match when it comes to the family, the city, and the overall environment.
