Lucija, one of our cultural exchange participants, writes to us from Durango—a small town with a big spirit, nestled in the rugged beauty of Colorado—where she’s been living for the past three months. Here’s what she had to share about her experience.
I’ve always dreamed of living in the U.S. I wanted to know how people live here, and what their habits are… and I’ve always felt this strange pull toward a country I’d never even been to. One part of me wanted to leap, while the other was content with the job and life I had back home. I hesitated for a long time—but stepping out of my comfort zone turned out to be the best decision I’ve ever made! 🙂
Lucija is currently living in the mountains just outside Durango, a peaceful little town with a tight-knit, outdoorsy community.
Almost everyone here hikes, runs, bikes, or skis. It’s a pretty chill place, and I love that. Honestly, this program has exceeded every expectation I had. My host family welcomed me like one of their own—I’ve never once felt like a stranger, and I haven’t felt homesick at all. Right now, I’m packing for a Thanksgiving trip with the family to Arizona, and we’ll be spending Christmas in California. I’m excited to experience their holiday traditions firsthand.
Her schedule is a little different from other au pairs in the area, so she doesn’t get much time to socialize with them. But she’s making the most of her solo time.
When I’m free, I love going hiking, exploring the town, or just curling up with a good book. Everyone here is so kind and generous—strangers will chat with you at a restaurant like you’ve known each other for years, offer help if you need it, and always greet you with a smile. It’s incredibly easy to feel at home here.
Her message to future participants?
After all the back-and-forth about whether I should go, I can honestly say it was worth every bit of risk. I’m exactly where I’m meant to be—and it couldn’t have worked out any better. So to anyone thinking about it, all I can say is: Step outside of the box and go for it!
