Cultural Exchange in Italy During the Coronavirus Era

Sonja is sending warm greetings from Italy, where she’s currently taking part in a cultural exchange program. Read on for her reflections and advice:

Cultural exchange in Italy during the time of COVID. Yes or no? To be or not to be? Dear future participants—those who have already found their host families and those just starting the search—I want to tell you: be brave and do what feels right for you. I’m currently in Italy, and my adventure is coming to an end in just a few weeks. I’ve been here since it all began, near Milan. A city so beautiful and full of life, now almost deserted because of the current situation. Italy has been in the spotlight largely because it’s tested more people for the virus than most other European countries, which naturally means more confirmed cases.

When the news about the virus in Italy reached Serbia, you can imagine the reactions. Everyone panicking: ‘Sonja, how are you? Are you okay? Pack your things and come home before they close the borders!’… Meanwhile, we were sitting down for dinner, chatting cheerfully, not quite believing the hype. Life goes on—people are still working, traveling, washing their hands, and staying home if they’re sick. In Milan, schools, museums, and public places are closed as a precaution, so yes, things feel a bit quiet and boring, but hopefully not for much longer. We’re all hoping it’ll pass soon. What matters most for you is that you’re working with children and should take care of your health.

She also has a message for future candidates:

If you’re unsure, talk to your coordinators and your future host family. They are your biggest support during this whole process and they truly want you to have a safe, enjoyable experience. A cultural exchange like this is something unforgettable and rare—maybe even once-in-a-lifetime. Italy is stunning, and absolutely worth visiting! But the decision is ultimately yours. Think it through, talk it over, get informed—and don’t believe everything you hear in the media. I hope my experience has helped ease your mind and guide you toward the right decision. Just be bold—and good luck!
