Iva, one of our cultural exchange participants, writes to us from the cozy town of Wellsville, just outside Salt Lake City, where she’s been living for the past two months. Here’s what she had to say about her life-changing adventure so far.

I’m thrilled with the program! Over these 13 months, I’ll have the chance to get to know my host family and travel around the U.S. What makes this experience so special is the opportunity to live for a full year with a real American family and immerse myself in their way of life.

The family I’m with has six kids—which some might see as a big responsibility—but I can honestly say, I couldn’t have asked for a better family. From the moment I arrived, they welcomed me like one of their own.

Even after just two months, Iva says it already feels like home.

We celebrate holidays together and go on trips, and every day brings something new. The town I’m in is small and about an hour from Salt Lake City, but there’s always something happening. It’s safe and charming, and the people are incredibly friendly. That’s why I truly believe this is one of the best programs out there—it gives you a chance to fully live the American lifestyle.

She fills her free time with all sorts of activities:

I’ve been exploring the town and nearby cities, going to basketball games, hiking with the family… And with winter just around the corner, I’m planning to ski in my downtime. I’ve already lined up trips to Denver and New York for the holidays!

But what she values most is the warmth and freedom she feels.

The best part has been the amazing relationship I have with my host family and the balance I’ve found. Even with my daily responsibilities, I always have time for myself. They’ve welcomed me so openly—I’m invited to every family gathering, and that feeling of belonging is something I’ll never forget. I’m meeting new people, learning about their culture, and becoming part of their world.

I’d tell anyone who’s thinking about it—don’t overthink it, just apply! If you have the chance, go for it, because this will be one of the most incredible experiences of your life. I had no idea I’d love it this much—but now I know for sure: if you get the opportunity, take it.
