Going to China – The Best Decision I’ve Ever Made

Nina is currently in her 10th month in China as a participant in a cultural exchange program. Below, she shares a glimpse into her unforgettable experience:

I originally applied for the cultural exchange program in China intending to stay for six months and then return to my usual life in Serbia. But during the interview, the family offered me a 12-month stay—and without much thought, I impulsively said yes. Looking back now, I can say it was the best decision I’ve ever made.

I’ve been living in Shanghai for almost 10 months, and though I was supposed to return home soon, I’ve decided to extend my stay for another six months. So now, I’m only halfway through this amazing journey. China offers so many opportunities. Everything here feels different from what we see in the Balkans—or even in Europe.

Much of what we think we know about China doesn’t quite match reality.
The culture, customs, traditions, beliefs, the people—the way they talk, live, and interact—is completely different from what we’re used to.

Yes, they can be loud. The language can sound harsh and intense. They don’t have the same sense of personal space. But they’re also kind, welcoming, funny, and full of life. They love to laugh, sing, drink, and surround themselves with big groups of friends.

My host family welcomed me immediately as one of their own, and I truly feel like part of the family. We do everything together—from school performances and daily outings to weekend trips. They’ve made being away from home easier and made sure I always felt supported.

They’re curious about my culture, just as eager to share theirs. Together, we’ve visited both famous tourist destinations and hidden gems across China. There’s so much to see and try here, which is why I decided to stay longer.

Over time, things got easier. I now understand people on the street, in cafés, at the supermarket. It was tough at first, but I’ve overcome the language barrier. Everything changes when you order food in Mandarin, give directions to a taxi driver, or chat with kids at the park.

Yes, people still take photos of me, stare, or approach just to check if I speak Chinese—but now I barely notice. It’s become part of my everyday life.

I’ve met people from all over the world—different countries, different cultures.
I even met a girl from Bosnia while waiting for the elevator, and a group from Serbia while out walking in the city. Some of these people have become close friends—people I know will be part of my life even after this experience ends.

As I said, this truly was the best decision I’ve made.

Sure, there have been hard moments—but those fade when compared to all the amazing ones. If you’re thinking about coming—my answer is yes. Go for it.

Time flies. My departure date is getting closer…
But next to that date on my calendar? A big question mark. 🙂
