Writing from the vibrant heart of Shanghai, Nina shares her reflections after two months in China—and it’s safe to say she’s already fallen under its spell.
If someone had told me I’d travel to the other side of the world, alone, to live with people I’d never met—I never would’ve believed them. But here I am. And China is, in one word, fascinating.
Nina currently lives in Shanghai, a city she describes as fast-paced, buzzing with life, and rich in contrasts. One moment, you’re walking past ancient temples and museums; the next, you’re surrounded by trendy cafés, bars, and neon-lit restaurants.
“The culture is completely different from what I’m used to back home in the Balkans,” she says.
Food, Family, and Firsts
Before arriving, Nina thought Chinese food was all about rice.
Now I know better—there’s so much variety, flavor, color, and aroma that there’s truly something for everyone.
She’s been lucky with her host family, too—“absolutely wonderful” in her words.
They treat her like a member of the family: two kind parents, a cheerful 11-year-old boy, and an energetic 5-year-old girl. They’ve introduced her to their culture, traditions, friends, and language, making her feel at home in a completely foreign land.
Together, they’ve already traveled to several cities in China, but one destination stands out: Sanya.
We spent a whole month there and celebrated the Lunar New Year. The city glowed with red lanterns, fireworks echoed through the streets, and the atmosphere was pure magic.
Navigating the Everyday
Chinese people, are extremely kind and welcoming.
Even though very few speak English, they still smile, wave, and even stop to ask for a photo with her.
Of course, not everything is picture-perfect.
The crowds are overwhelming—on the street, in the metro, in traffic, in parks, cafés… But I’m slowly getting used to it.
Nina’s journey is just beginning, but she’s already filled with stories, experiences, and unforgettable moments.
It’s been two months, and I’m having an amazing time. This adventure? It’s only just begun.
