My Life in Mallorca

Sonja recently returned from a cultural exchange program after spending a full three months on the beautiful island of Mallorca, in a town called Petra. Looking back now, she says the time flew by—and honestly, she wasn’t ready to pack her bags.

The adjustment to a new lifestyle came quickly, and she clicked with her host family from day one.

The family I stayed with has this warm, truly Spanish atmosphere, and that energy suits me. They’ve been kind and welcoming from the start, treating me like a real member of the family. I wouldn’t trade them for anything.

When most people think of Mallorca, they picture crowds, nightlife, and non-stop action—but the town Sonja stayed in offered a completely different vibe: quiet, relaxed, and rural.

This place fits me perfectly. If you’re looking for peace, you’ll find it here. The people are friendly and open, although I wouldn’t say it’s the most exciting place for a young person to live long-term. I had my weekdays free until 2 p.m., so I used that time to explore nearby towns and spots. There’s no such thing as a bad choice here—every place has its charm. Even though the tourist season had already wrapped up, I still managed to go for a swim at some of the island’s stunning beaches.

Most evenings from 5 p.m. onward, Sonja spent her time going out with friends she met during the program, often venturing further out across the island. When asked what she loved the most about her experience, it was hard for her to choose.

I honestly loved everything—from the towns and beaches to the people and their easygoing way of life.

Her advice for future participants?

Don’t wait—just go for it. All you need is a willingness to try something new—and, of course, a little luck in finding a family that will truly respect you and your time. Adjusting to their rhythm might not be easy at first, but it’s worth it.
