Sanja shares her reflections from Spain—and it’s clear she’s soaking up every moment of her cultural exchange journey.
When I came across CAR’s event inviting people to join cultural exchange programs, it felt like a no-brainer—an opportunity for a new adventure without much hassle (judging by the program requirements). As someone who finds joy in travel and discovering new cultures, I decided to gift myself two and a half months in Spain before stepping into the working world.
Now, after spending a full month in Madrid with a big, cheerful family, I can confidently say I made the right call by choosing this path. I was welcomed at the airport by five smiling faces and open arms, and I instantly knew I’d be treated like one of their own.
On weekdays, I spend my mornings with the kids, and on weekends, I wander the charming streets of Madrid or take day trips to beautiful nearby towns. At the beginning, the family took the time to show me around, which helped melt away any fears of the unfamiliar. They include me in all their plans, so I always have the option to join them for a picnic, a park outing, or a movie night.
Our schedule is super flexible—we crafted a routine that works for everyone, leaving me enough time to take Spanish classes and even enjoy a few extra free days for longer trips. Next stop: Granada! Thanks to our coordinator at CAR, I’ve also met other exchange participants, and we’re already planning more trips together and making memories I know we’ll cherish for years.
Right now, there’s nothing more magical to me than the music playing in the streets, the buzzing bars, the lively voices of the locals, and that adorable Spanish accent. Beautiful city, beautiful people, beautiful host family.
If you love to travel, meet new people, learn languages, and simply soak in new scenery, this program is definitely for you. It’s hands down the easiest and most rewarding way to truly feel the essence of life in another country.
