Perfect for the Adventurous Soul – Milica’s Story from Spain

Milica, a participant in the cultural exchange program with Spain, shares her story straight from the beautiful coastal city of Santander. As someone looking to try something completely new before wrapping up her studies, she saw this summer as the perfect time to dive into a unique experience—and she wasn’t wrong.

She applied for the program in March, and by June, she was already chatting with her future host family. The anticipation only grew from there. Her host family, as she describes, has been wonderful—they have two young boys, ages 3 and 5, which meant her basic Spanish skills came in handy from the very beginning. Like most little ones, it took a bit of time to build trust, but after about three weeks, they’d settled into a good rhythm.

Weekends have been reserved for beach days or quick trips, and she’s loving her current location. Santander, the capital of Cantabria in northern Spain, is just the right size—buzzing with life in the summer but full of that small-town charm Milica has always appreciated. With easy access to places like the Basque Country and even Altamira’s famous caves, there’s no shortage of cultural gems nearby. And for the spontaneous traveler? Santander’s budget-friendly airport makes weekend getaways a breeze.

Of course, she couldn’t leave out the food—Spanish cuisine has more than lived up to the hype, and every meal has been a treat.

Milica wholeheartedly recommends this program to anyone with a sense of adventure and a love for discovering new cultures. For her, it’s been a hands-on way to experience life abroad—something no guidebook or vacation could ever match.
