One of our cultural exchange participants in Spain, Dunja, spent two months in El Rompido, a small seaside town on the southern coast of Spain near Huelva. Here’s what she had to say about her journey:
At first, I wanted to go back home because everything felt new and overwhelming. I didn’t think I’d be able to adapt, but over time, things just fell into place. I’m so grateful I got to meet this family and spend the summer with them. Of course, the child I took care of will always have a special place in my heart—we shared so many unforgettable moments. Looking back now, I can honestly say this entire experience went far beyond what I expected.
In my free time, I traveled a lot with another au pair who happened to be living in the same town. The best part of this experience was getting to meet new people and immerse myself in a different culture. What meant the most to me was finding someone who was going through the same thing I was—thanks to this program, I made a friend for life.
To anyone even slightly interested in applying, my advice is simple: don’t hesitate and don’t overthink it. Dive into the adventure this program offers. In the beginning, it might feel like work—teaching a language, babysitting—but in the end, you’ll realize that this exchange is everything but work. It’s a beautiful, enriching experience waiting for you. Trust me—you won’t regret it!
