Far From Home, Closer to Myself – Cultural Exchange in Spain

Jelena, one of our participants in the cultural exchange program with Spain, sends warm greetings from Barcelona, where she’s been living for a month now. Read on to discover more about her experience.

I’d love to share what it’s been like spending the past month in Spain. When it comes to Barcelona, words honestly don’t do it justice—this city has something for everyone. Since I arrived, no two days have felt the same. There’s always something happening: sports events, concerts, parades, and festivals. The energy of the people and the lifestyle I’ve seen in my host family have truly inspired and motivated me.
I’ve learned so much about Spanish culture just by being with them, and I think this is the best way to get an authentic feel for a country. Thanks to their warmth and support, I was able to adapt very quickly.

In my free time, I explore different landmarks and interesting spots I find online or that are recommended by my host family and new friends. It makes a huge difference if you can connect with others in the program—just reach out to the agency and ask for contacts in your area. It’s amazing having someone to share experiences with and make plans together.
I’ve gotten to know Spain on a much deeper level—how people live, what they value, their culture and traditions. This experience has taught me to embrace differences and approach life with a more open mind. I’ve learned to appreciate some things more and let go of others. Stepping outside of my comfort zone has been one of the best decisions I’ve made, and I truly hope this is just the beginning.
