This Program Truly Opened My Eyes – Natalija’s Story from Spain

Natalija didn’t quite know what she was getting herself into when she signed up for the cultural exchange program in Spain, but as she puts it, it turned out even better than she expected. Currently living in Ourense, a charming city tucked away in the green and misty region of Galicia, she’s halfway through her two-month adventure—and loving every moment of it.

From day one, her host family made her feel completely at home. She bonded with them quickly and says they now feel like close friends. She’ll definitely stay in touch with them long after the program ends. Of course, working with kids always comes with its ups and downs. It took about a week or two for everyone to fully settle into their new routine, but now things flow much more smoothly. Sure, patience is key—but the sweet moments with the kids are what she knows she’ll cherish most.

Natalija has also been swept up in the warm, joyful energy that Spain is famous for. She describes the people as friendly, welcoming, and eager to help—even if many of them don’t speak English. It’s that openness, she says, that made adjusting to life in a new environment so much easier.

On her free days, she’s had the chance to explore the surrounding region—visiting cities like Vigo and Santiago, soaking in the coastal vibes at nearby beaches, and even hopping over the border to Porto in Portugal, which is just a short trip away.

Throughout her time in Spain, both through day-to-day life and weekend travels, she’s learned a lot about Spanish culture, sharpened her language skills, and most importantly, broadened her worldview. Just one month in, and she already feels like this experience has helped her grow in every possible way.
