Our cultural exchange participant in Italy, Vukosava, is writing to us from Turin, where she has been staying for a month now. Read more about her experience below.
The family that hosted me in Italy radiated warmth and kindness from the very first moment we met. They welcomed me with open hearts and great care, allowing me to feel like a part of their community. The little girl I take care of is a true treasure – cheerful, curious, and extremely well-behaved. Her playfulness and eagerness to learn bring joy to each day we spend together, and through her eyes, I’m discovering the beauty of Italy myself. I was incredibly lucky that, thanks to this family, I got to know not only Turin, where they are originally from but also other parts of Italy. I was especially enchanted by a place called Forte dei Marmi, where they spend their summers. This beautiful town in Tuscany, located on the coast of the Ligurian Sea, is full of elegance and charm, with its long sandy beaches, the scent of pine trees, and picturesque little streets that lead to a vibrant coastline. Every walk through Forte dei Marmi is filled with peace and admiration for the luxurious architecture and natural beauty this corner of Tuscany has to offer. This experience allowed me to fully immerse myself in Italian culture, language, and history – everything I signed up for when I applied for this cultural exchange program. The days I spent here, surrounded by warm people and a rich cultural heritage, will forever remain etched in my memory.
I spend my free time exploring the nearby areas, and discovering the beauty of Tuscany that stretches beyond Forte dei Marmi. I was especially delighted by the city of Lucca, located not far from here, with its enchanting medieval walls and charming streets that breathe history. I also visited Pietrasanta, a city known for its rich artistic tradition, where sculptures adorn every corner and every street tells its own story. These trips give me an invaluable opportunity to get to know the locals, who welcome me with kindness and openness. Conversations with them allow me to learn firsthand about their way of life, traditions, and customs, and to gain a deeper understanding of Italy and its culture. Every moment here is precious, because Italy truly is a treasure for tourists – a country that enchants with its rich history, irresistible architecture, and endless sources of inspiration at every turn. Every new place I visit, and every new conversation I have, enriches me in a way I could only dream of before coming here.
What won me over the most are the people I’ve met here – their warmth, cheerful spirit, and incredible approachability. Every encounter with locals fills me with a sense of welcome as if I were among old friends. Italians won me over with their hospitality, just as I imagined they would, but now I’ve experienced it firsthand. The family I’m staying with gave me a sense of belonging, accepting me as one of their own, which made me feel at home here. All in all, every moment I spend in this beautiful country makes me feel like Italy isn’t just a destination, but my home.
