Majda, one of our cultural exchange participants, is currently living in Seattle, famously known as the “Emerald City,” where she’ll be spending the next year. Here’s what she had to say about her experience so far.
From day one, I felt like I’d known my host family for years. They’re incredibly kind, culturally aware, full of positive energy, and always there when I need support. The city reminds me a lot of my hometown, which made settling in easier. The only thing I struggled with at first was adjusting to the time difference.
Seattle is absolutely beautiful and peaceful, and the people here are incredibly friendly and patient. They’re always open to making new friends and happy to help out whenever needed.
Majda’s free time is filled with simple joys and meaningful moments.
I spend a lot of my free time going out with the family, walking through parks, watching the ocean, and occasionally squeezing in a workout. This program isn’t just about working and resting – it’s also about building communication and creating real connections with the family you live with.
She also found a new friend at an au pair meet-up.
I met a lovely girl who, like me, hadn’t been in the U.S. for long, and we hit it off right away. Now we make time to hang out whenever we’re both free.
What stood out most to her?
What I love most is how much effort the family puts into making me feel accepted and at home. I also really appreciate how everything is done through open communication – we plan my work hours, rest time, classes, and everything else together.

I’d encourage anyone thinking about it to go for it – this is something you’ll remember for the rest of your life. It might be tough to leave behind your usual routine, but it’s so worth it. You’ll experience a new culture, improve your English, and get a glimpse of how life works in another part of the world.
