The Best Things Happen Outside Your Comfort Zone – Cultural Exchange in the USA

Nevena, one of our cultural exchange participants, is writing to us from Hyattsville, a suburb right on the edge of Washington, D.C., where she’s been living for nearly a month. Here’s what she had to say about her experience so far.

Being part of a cultural exchange program is truly a big change—and a one-of-a-kind experience! Living in a foreign country has opened my eyes to a whole new way of life, as I’m constantly learning about different cultures, and habits, and meeting new people.

Her new home is a vibrant, urban setting right next to the U.S. capital.

What makes this experience even more special is that I sometimes get to speak Serbian with my host family. We manage to communicate in both Serbian and English, which is the main language we use every day—it adds a really nice personal touch.

Nevena has been spending her free time soaking up everything Washington, D.C. has to offer.

I love exploring all the city’s landmarks! From the countless free museums and public squares to fun spots for hanging out with new friends, there’s always something to do. And weekends? They’re reserved for the classic American brunch!

She also shared her appreciation for the support she’s received during her stay.

I’ve been really happy with the agency’s support while living abroad. It’s comforting to know that whenever I have a question or something feels unclear, there’s always someone I can reach out to.
