Stefana, a participant in the cultural exchange program with China, shares her impressions straight from Shanghai. Here’s what she had to say:
I’m writing to you from Shanghai—a city I’ve fallen so in love with that I’m seriously considering continuing my studies here. Every single day, I encounter things that are completely different from my own culture, and I’m still adjusting. This is without a doubt the country with the biggest cultural contrast I’ve ever experienced. But that’s exactly what makes it so valuable—getting to live it firsthand and form new friendships along the way.
This is actually my second cultural exchange trip, and I believe China is a challenge everyone should experience at least once. Shanghai is one of the most developed and safest cities in the world. Sometimes I think the reason people here feel so different is because they live surrounded by technology that still seems unimaginable where I’m from.
That said, they’re incredibly kind, open-minded, and always willing to help. Taxis are super affordable, the food is delicious (and very spicy!), and one thing that really stood out to me—they drink only hot water because they believe it cures everything!
So far, I’m beyond happy with my host family, the people I’ve met, and everything I’ve experienced—and there’s still more time left in the program! I hope I’ll be able to continue my studies or even complete a Master’s degree here in Shanghai.
But for now… I have to run—shopping awaits! 🙂
