The Perfect City to Discover China – Cultural Exchange in Shanghai

Stefan-Đurađ, a participant in the cultural exchange program with China, writes to us from the vibrant city of Shanghai. Here’s what he had to say about his experience so far:

I’ve traveled quite a bit across Europe and North Africa, but nothing could have truly prepared me for this—no matter how many videos I watched beforehand. In my opinion, Shanghai is the perfect place to experience both old and new China.

Towering glass skyscrapers and colonial European architecture dominate the city center, while just a short walk away you’ll find pieces of old China—temples, gardens, and quaint riverside towns. I love getting lost in the city’s neon-lit nights, but what really captures my heart are the places that reflect China’s history. And the best part? Suzhou, also known as the “Venice of China,” is just around the corner.

One unexpected twist in Stefan’s journey?

Photography. I never cared much about it before, but here, it’s become one of my favorite hobbies. Every corner of Shanghai has its own character—especially those small, winding alleyways that weave through the city’s busy main roads.

Shanghai is a city in constant motion. There’s always something happening. Just recently, there was a “Lord of the Rings” convention, and the city was filled with people in full costume. Watching someone dressed as an elf casually order a burger at Burger King? Priceless.

Another thing I love is how connected Shanghai is to Western culture. I don’t think I could find this mix anywhere else. There have even been Christmas markets and New Year’s parties here—something I never expected to find in China.

Of course, a lot depends on your personality, but for me, Shanghai has made it incredibly easy to make friends.

As for his host family, Stefan says:

I’ve been really lucky. The family has two children—a boy and a little girl. I spend most of my time with the boy since the girl is still very young. Honestly, he’s exactly like I was as a kid, which gives me the perfect excuse to run around the house yelling “The orcs are attacking!” with a pretend sword… and not seem completely crazy.

The grandparents are wonderful, but the person I’ve bonded with the most is the grandmother. She’s become like a second mother to me. She’s always there when I need help, supports me in everything, and gives honest advice on anything I want to talk about. She pushes me every day to be the best version of myself.

I know this is an experience I’ll always carry with me—it’s already changed me for the better. And even though I’m only halfway through my stay, I’m already thinking about how to come back here once I finish my studies.
