Tamara, a participant in the cultural exchange program with China, shares her unforgettable story from the bustling heart of Shanghai:
I had more luck than sense, The decision to pack my bags and fly solo across the planet for six months, to live with a family I’d never met—it was impulsive. But I’m an adventurer at heart. No great story starts with, ‘I played it safe…
And what a story it turned out to be.
A Life Turned Upside Down—in the Best Way
Tamara’s experience in China took a sharp, joyful turn from day one.
The family that welcomed me was incredible. They told me I didn’t have to eat Chinese food if I didn’t want to—they were ready to buy me anything I liked. But guess what? I completely switched to Chinese cuisine! It’s colorful, flavorful, and full of surprises.
From fancy restaurant dinners to casual meals at home, they introduced her to local customs and everyday life.
I felt like one of them—from grocery runs and business dinners to company parties and even family vacations. Where they go, I go!Oh, Shanghai…
Shanghaaai, this city has something for everyone.
Modern skyscrapers pierce the sky. The largest metro system in the world stretches underneath, complete with incredible stations and rivers of people. Urban cafés, contemporary galleries, museums, street markets, water towns—it’s all there, and it’s magical.
Tamara strategically timed her trip to experience the Lunar New Year, and it did not disappoint.
A New Year, a New Chapter
I spent four days alone before New Year’s just wandering the city. That freedom, that energy—it was unforgettable. The whole place was alive with celebration: red lanterns, joyful people, festive traditions, and yes, I got my lucky red envelope too.
And then came Disneyland.
At 22, I felt like a kid again. I even teared up a little—it was surreal. I couldn’t believe this was really happening to me.Shanghai left its mark on Tamara in the most unexpected ways—and she has no doubts about the future.
I’m definitely coming back.
