Jovana, one of our cultural exchange participants, writes to us from Alexandria, a scenic city along the Potomac River, where she’s been living for the past three and a half months. Here’s what she had to say about her experience so far.
Going to America has always been a dream of mine—and thanks to this program, I finally made it come true. What’s amazing is that it allows you to stay in the U.S. for a full year, which is longer than many other exchange programs. I’m really happy with my host family—they’ve embraced me as one of their own. We have a great relationship, and the kids adore me.
She’s already gotten used to her new lifestyle and surroundings.
I’ve adjusted quickly to life here. Alexandria has exceeded all my expectations. I love the city, the area, and all the nearby towns I’ve had the chance to explore. I try to spend as much time as I can outside, discovering new places and enjoying the outdoors.
One thing that truly impressed her was the people.
Everyone is so kind and always ready to lend a hand. I’ve especially been blown away by all the monuments and museums in the city center! On weekends, I usually hang out with friends—we go on picnics, check out different restaurants and bars, and try new foods and drinks.

I’d tell anyone considering this experience to go for it. Step out of your comfort zone and see the world! You won’t regret it!
