Bravely Toward New Horizons – Cultural Exchange in China

Con valentía hacia nuevos horizontes - Intercambio cultural en China

Mirjam, one of our cultural exchange participants, shares her story from Shenzhen—China’s very own “Silicon Valley.” Here’s what her life looks like in this vibrant, tech-forward corner of the world:

Living with a Chinese host family is definitely a unique, exciting, and sometimes challenging experience. Cultural differences are very much present and show up in all sorts of ways. But despite those differences, I get along with the family really well. They’ve truly welcomed me as an equal member of the household.

After spending quite a bit of time in Spain, I’ve now found myself in China—and I can honestly say this experience is priceless. China is a place that requires a bit of courage to embrace fully. It’s a country where culture isn’t just part of life—it is the foundation of society. But that’s exactly what makes this journey so special and so different from any other.

About the agency and day-to-day life, she adds:

The agency has been great overall—responses come in a reasonable time and the entire application process went pretty smoothly. In my free time, I explore the city as much as I can and meet new people along the way.

What’s stood out the most for me? Just the overall experience of living in a country like China—it’s so vastly different from where I’m from. Oh, and of course, the Great Wall! My host family even made it possible for me to visit Beijing, which I’m incredibly grateful for.

And her message to future participants?

This program definitely requires courage—I won’t lie about that. But once you gather enough of it and take that leap, you won’t regret it. This journey will enrich your life in ways you never imagined and help you grow in the long run.

So if you’re hesitating—don’t. Go for it! You won’t be sorry 😄 Just make sure to choose the right host family, and you’re in for an amazing time. Mine has truly been the best.
