Cultural Exchange in Spain: An Experience That Lasts a Lifetime

Our cultural exchange participant in Spain, Katarina, recently returned from the charming town of Santanyí, located on the southwestern coast of Mallorca, where she spent two months. Here’s what she had to say about her experience.

Spain has always been a country I wanted to visit and get to know, which is exactly why I chose it. I felt this program would be a great opportunity to learn more about the culture and language, while also exploring nearby cities. I stayed in a small town called Santanyí on Mallorca. It’s a beautiful place, full of tourists and stunning beaches.

I stayed with a family where the parents were divorced, so one of the biggest challenges for me was frequently switching homes. I didn’t connect very well with the mother, but the father and his girlfriend were incredibly kind and made an effort to include me. Thanks to them, I got to travel around, try traditional food, and learn more about the local culture.

Since I had weekends off, I tried to use that time to the fullest. Every weekend, I’d head out with friends to explore new towns and beaches.

The support I got from the agency, both before and during my time in Spain, meant a lot. They even helped me book my plane tickets in both directions, which made things easier since it was my first time flying.

If you’re thinking about signing up for this program, my biggest advice is to choose your host family carefully—you’re going to be living with them for a while, and that dynamic matters. Also, make sure you bring enough money so that you can travel freely and treat yourself to a few extras. You never know when a new adventure might pop up just around the corner.

Looking back, I can confidently say this program completely changed the way I see the world. It’s the kind of experience that leaves a mark on you for life.
