Stay Curious and Embrace the Experience

Mejra, one of our cultural exchange participants, chose Italy as her destination and spent a month immersed in the local culture. Her main goal? To improve her Italian. But, as she says, her expectations were already exceeded by day three. Read more about Mejra’s short but sweet adventure below.

I’m coming back with so many new connections, experiences, places I’ve visited, dishes I’ve tasted, feeling more independent, open-minded, and free—and on top of it all, with improved Italian skills. Believe me, there’s no better way to learn Italian than being surrounded by it. My advice: refresh your grammar at home, and while you’re there, focus on vocabulary, accent, and similarities between your native or English and Italian. That’s the fastest route to progress—every day gets better and better as you understand more of the language around you.

Her daily responsibilities were minimal and low-effort, which she says is a plus for any participant. The rest of her time was spent soaking up the summer: relaxing on the beach with friends, playing volleyball, paddleboarding, and swimming in the pool. She also made time to explore—visiting Bergamo, Milan, Lake Como, Florence, and nearby towns.

Beyond language learning, Mejra recommends the program to anyone looking for personal growth and a shift in perspective.

You grow so much just by learning from others. My advice? Stay curious and relaxed! And of course, I want to thank the whole team at the Center for Affirmation and Development for existing and offering these kinds of opportunities to all of us. Warmest recommendations to everyone!
