Vladimirka, one of our cultural exchange participants in Spain, writes to us from Benalmádena, where she’s been living for the past month. Here’s what she shared about her journey:
This program is an incredible way to truly experience the culture of another country—and I can say with confidence that I’ve had the best kind of introduction. I’m currently staying with a family in Benalmádena, about 30 kilometers from Málaga, taking care of two lovely girls, aged 11 and 14. Even during our first video call, I felt an instant connection with the family—and now I know my instincts were spot on.
She describes her host family as warm, kind, and genuinely eager to make her feel at home. In return, she makes an effort to give back the same love and respect. During the day, I help the girls with English and take them to the pool or their beach training sessions. Benalmádena itself feels very safe and has so much to offer—from beautiful beaches and great restaurants to well-connected and affordable public transportation. Its location is ideal for exploring Andalusia, and it’s just 20 minutes from the airport.
She has every afternoon and weekend off and makes the most of that time. Sometimes we go shopping or to the beach as a family—even when I’m technically off-duty, they always invite me to join. I also spend a lot of my free time in nearby Málaga, which has gorgeous streets, historic fortresses, museums, and cozy bars.
Together with new friends she’s made in Spain, Vladimirka often goes on day trips to nearby places like Marbella, Ronda, and Nerja. “Whenever possible, I plan bigger trips—like my visit to Granada, which I organized with my host family’s support. Sevilla is next on the list because Andalusia has so much to explore for anyone curious enough to dive in.
So, what stood out most? Honestly, the warmth of this family. I was welcomed with open arms. And I love how people here remind me of those back home—the mentality is so familiar, it feels like I never left.
Her message to future participants:
If you’re on the fence about this program, I say go for it. It’s an amazing opportunity and a life-changing experience. It’ll boost your confidence, broaden your horizons, and bring meaningful friendships into your life. Sure, it takes courage—but the reward is worth it.
