In Italy, I Don’t Feel Like a Stranger

Our cultural exchange participant in Italy, Natalija, writes to us from Armeno, a small town in the province of Novara, where she spent a month and a half. Read more about her experience below.

From the very first day, the host family was incredibly understanding and made a real effort to help me feel comfortable with them. The two girls I looked after were responsible and independent, and we were able to agree on everything without any issues.

I mostly spent my time exploring the area around Armeno. Northern Italy is full of beautiful lakes and tiny islands, so I used every opportunity to go out and see as much as I could. Milan was also close by, so I managed to spend a bit of time there too, and get a small taste of that gorgeous city.

What stood out the most to me was the atmosphere in the family—their warmth, closeness, and the love they share. Not for a single moment did I feel like a stranger.

It’s the kind of experience that words can’t quite describe—you simply have to live it. It changes you, makes you more independent, and allows you to fall in love with a completely different culture in a special way.
