A Life-Changing Experience – A Cultural Exchange Journey in Spain

Un'esperienza che cambia la vita - Un viaggio di scambio culturale in Spagna

Željana, one of our cultural exchange participants, writes to us from vibrant Barcelona—more specifically, from the charming city of Sabadell, where she’s been living during her stay in Spain. Surrounded by culture, warm people, and a whole new way of life, Željana’s story is one of growth, discovery, and joy. Here’s what she had to say:

I’m currently living in Sabadell, a smaller city about 45 minutes by train from Barcelona. It’s a lively place, full of cafés and restaurants where you can try all kinds of Catalan specialties. Thanks to the great train connections, I often head into Barcelona too.As for my host family—saying I’m happy would be an understatement. From day one, they made me feel like part of the family and completely at ease in their home, which is truly the most important thing. Our communication has been great, and we easily found ways to work together and compromise so that both sides are comfortable and happy.I have quite a bit of free time, so I try to make the most of it. I often hop on the train to Barcelona—a city full of narrow streets where you could walk and get lost for hours, and around every corner, there’s something new and unexpected waiting for you. The architecture, the famous Gaudí houses, the greenery throughout the city… it’s honestly surreal.Even when you think you’ve seen it all, you realize there’s always more—there are always events happening in the squares, streets, and parks. Some days I plan out packed itineraries, visiting museums (there’s something for everyone!), checking out the city’s landmarks… and other days, I just head out without a plan, sip coffee by the sea, read a book, and try out more Catalan dishes. What I’ve loved the most so far is definitely the host family. The way they welcomed me into their home, their kindness and understanding, and their effort to help me get to know their culture and way of life—it meant everything. I also really like the town I’m staying in, how close it is to Barcelona, and the amount of free time I have to fully enjoy the experience of living in Spain.

When it comes to working with our team, Željana says:

I’ve been really satisfied with the collaboration. The coordinators were always available to answer any and all questions, and they provided all the information I needed to feel fully prepared when it came to choosing a host family and finally traveling to Spain. I felt truly supported by the Center throughout the entire process.

And here’s her advice to future participants:

To anyone considering applying—I say go for it! You won’t regret it, but you might regret not giving it a try. This is one big leap outside your comfort zone, but it’s also the kind of experience that changes you. You learn more about yourself and others, you figure things out as you go, and in the process, you gather incredible memories that will stay with you for life. The happiness and fulfillment you feel during this adventure are absolutely priceless—and impossible to put into words. It’s something everyone who wants to should definitely experience!
