Amina, one of our cultural exchange participants, writes to us from the Great Lakes state of Michigan, where she’s been living for the past three months. Here’s what she had to say about her experience so far.
My first impressions were honestly amazing—exactly how I imagined things would be. The family is great, the kids are adorable!! The town I’m living in is lovely—peaceful and quiet, which is just how I like it. It didn’t take long at all for me to settle in, both with the environment and with the family.
With plenty of free time on her hands, Amina makes the most of it by exploring.
I often visit Downtown Detroit, and it’s absolutely beautiful! It’s about an hour away, but worth the drive.
What did she appreciate most? The connection she formed with her host family from the very beginning.
The communication and relationship we built right from the start have been amazing. The family is so flexible and understanding, I haven’t run into a single issue. They’re also incredibly kind, and in the few months I’ve been here, I haven’t felt homesick for even a second—they’ve made me feel like I’m truly part of the family.
Her message to future applicants?
I always dreamed of visiting the U.S., and finally decided to take a leap of faith and apply for this program, hoping my long-time wish would come true—and it did! So if you want to experience life in America, dive into the culture, and explore everything it has to offer, I highly recommend applying as soon as you can. I have zero regrets—and believe me, you won’t either!
