Apply the First Chance You Get – Cultural Exchange in China

Mona, one of our cultural exchange participants, is writing to us from Yiwu, in Jinhua, Zhejiang province. She’s been fully immersed in Chinese culture for some time now, and here’s what she had to say about her experience so far:

When it comes to the host family—I honestly got more than I could’ve ever hoped for. They treat me just like one of their own. I have everything I need, and then some. They’re flexible, open to communication, and above all, just genuinely kind people.

The city I’m staying in is close to both Shanghai and Hangzhou, which is a huge plus—it gives me the chance to visit these iconic places without actually living in them. Big cities can be overwhelming, but in Yiwu, everything is easily accessible. It’s a smaller city, but it has everything you need, and getting around by taxi is simple and convenient.

Mona also shared what her daily life looks like:

I spend most of my time outside, exploring interesting places around the city, visiting shopping centers, and just enjoying long walks. When I stay home, I usually prepare for exams, study Chinese, or get lost in a good book.

The highlight of my entire stay? Definitely the host family. But one of the most unforgettable experiences was when they took me on a trip to Inner Mongolia. It was absolutely incredible.

Here’s what Mona had to say about working with the program team:

The Center has been amazing since day one—always quick to respond, present, and thorough when it comes to providing information, showing patience, and offering assistance throughout every step of the process. And that didn’t change once I arrived in China. If anything, their support became even more constant—they’re available 24/7, no matter what I need.

And her message to future participants?

Don’t overthink it—just apply as soon as you can! This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities you can only really take while you’re young, but it will stay with you forever. You’ll never be alone in the process. The Center will be there to guide and support you every step of the way, and their partner agencies in China are just as helpful and reliable.
