The Experience I’m Gaining Is Priceless – Cultural Exchange in China

Simona, a participant in the cultural exchange program with China, writes to us from afar to share her reflections on this life-changing journey:

When I applied for this program back in January, I had no idea what was waiting for me. I was hoping for an adventure—new people, a taste of Chinese culture, and a glimpse into a country I had only dreamed of until then. And I got all of that… and so much more.

After nearly two months here, I can confidently say this is one of the most authentic ways to experience cultural differences, to truly understand a different way of thinking and living. It’s not always perfect—far from it. Just like in any family, there are good days and bad days. Patience and mutual understanding are key.

I’ve always believed in keeping an open mind and leaving judgment behind—and this experience has really put that belief to the test. Here, I’m not just a passive observer—I’m actively part of everything. And while there are plenty of amazing moments, there are also a few uncomfortable ones too (like when strangers approach you on the street for a photo or a hug, or when you find yourself secretly watching others figure out how to eat a dish you can’t even name).

But honestly, those are the moments that make each day more exciting. In the end, it all comes down to how willing you are to step out of your comfort zone, and how open you are to adapting. And while that might sound scary at first, for me, the experience has been absolutely priceless.

The only thing I regret? Not applying sooner.
