Sara, one of our cultural exchange participants in Spain, spent a month and a half in Tarragona—where the legacy of Ancient Rome blends beautifully with the vibrant spirit of modern Spain. Here’s what she shared about her experience:
The host family I’m staying with is absolutely lovely and welcoming. We didn’t even go through the usual adjustment period—right from the ride home from the airport, we clicked. They live in Tarragona, a city rich in Roman ruins and archaeological sites, protected by UNESCO. It’s a dream for any history lover! But there’s also a modern side of the city for those who aren’t as into sightseeing. It’s no wonder it’s always buzzing with tourists.
Her host family made it a mission to share their love for the city and their culture with her.
They’ve taken me to so many places, introduced me to traditional dishes, and helped me become much more confident in speaking Spanish—and even a little Catalan! I’ve also met their extended family and friends, who’ve welcomed me as one of their own.
Of course, she’s had plenty of time for herself too:
There’s no pressure to spend my free time with the family—I often explore the city on my own or head to the beach, which I do almost daily. On weekends, I’ll either hop over to Barcelona solo or join the family on day trips to nearby towns. Honestly, I can’t pick just one thing that stood out—it’s everything together that’s made this whole journey so special.
