Andrea, one of our cultural exchange participants, writes to us from Igualada, a city just outside of Barcelona, where she’s currently living. Here’s what she had to say about her experience so far:
These past three weeks have been amazing, and I’m genuinely happy with everything. The host family is so open, approachable, and doing their best to make this a wonderful experience for me. The town is full of things to do—there’s never a dull moment!
She’s already settled into a routine:
I’ve started going to group fitness classes in the mornings while the family is at work and school. I also explore the city and keep discovering cool new spots. Another au pair will be joining the family in early March, and we’re planning to start Spanish language school together.
One of the things Andrea appreciates most is how much the family encourages her to spend her time meaningfully.
They include me in all their plans, which has helped me learn so much about their culture and traditions. In general, people here are so kind and welcoming. At my group workouts, for example, everyone knows I don’t speak Catalan or Spanish yet, and they make an effort to speak English. At a big family lunch during my first weekend, we shared traditional dishes, and the family even offered to help me practice Spanish in our free time.
She adds with a smile:
Honestly, wherever I’ve been here, I’ve felt completely welcome.
