Benvenuti a Hong Kong!

Igor, one of our ever-curious cultural exchange participants, takes us along on a vivid adventure through the electric streets of Hong Kong. Here’s what it’s like to land in a city that feels like its own world—because, technically, it kind of is.

A Country Within a Country (Kind Of)

Imagine a giant open-air shopping mall the size of a city—with the status of a country—where people drive on the wrong side of the road. Welcome to Hong Kong!

That’s how Igor kicks off his travel tale from the former British colony that now sits in a unique in-between space—part of China, but also not quite. Upon arrival, he was handed a brand-new entry permit, as his Chinese visa didn’t apply. Yep, different rules here.

Luckily, English is widely spoken, even among older generations, thanks to the city’s colonial past. And if the language doesn’t give it away, the architecture just might—Hong Kong looks more like New York than Beijing.

A City That Never Sleeps, and Never Stops Surprising You

Everywhere you turn, shops practically leap out at you, from global designer brands to quirky corner stalls. Traffic signs kindly remind you where to look before crossing the street (a blessing when cars come from the “wrong” direction), and most streets are thoughtfully divided by pedestrian islands—making it just a bit harder to get run over.

And the weather? Tropical. Igor found himself basking in 25°C and thick humidity—in November.

But perhaps the most charming contradiction? Amid all the skyscrapers and shopping frenzies, he always returned to the same cozy Indian restaurant, a comforting constant in the chaos.

The Unexpected Blend of Cultures

What really blew my mind, was the number of Filipinos and Indians here. In certain areas, they outnumber the Chinese population.

Add to that Hong Kong’s special customs zone—which makes it a hotspot for bargain hunters—and it becomes clear why many travelers swing by just for the shopping. Tech gadgets alone can be significantly cheaper than in mainland China.

Kowloon: The Hidden Gem

Staying in Kowloon offered Igor a different slice of the city—one with a distinctive mix of tropical vibes, urban buzz, and breathtaking views. He spotted distant mountain peaks cutting through the clouds and, for a moment, felt like he was gazing at a modern Olympus.

And though he didn’t make it across the bay to chase those peaks, what he did discover was just as magical: a sprawling park filled with whimsical fountains, historical statues, lush greenery, hedge mazes, and even a free open-air zoo.

It’s the kind of place you never knew cities were missing—until you see it.

While you’re still deciding, I’ll just wish you a safe and unforgettable journey. Hong Kong is waiting.
