Vera, a student of Italian language and literature, decided to take her passion a step further by joining a cultural exchange program in Italy. Her goal? To master the language she loves and experience Italy beyond the classroom.

I came across the program completely by chance while browsing online,” she recalls, “and it turned out to be one of the most beautiful—and most challenging—experiences of my life.

She landed in Florence with a calm heart, thanks to the supportive team at the Center for Youth Development and Affirmation.

The girls who mentored me were amazing. They guided me through every step and were always there if I needed anything.

During her time abroad, she had the chance to live in two different parts of Tuscany—Bagno a Ripoli and Florence—experiencing both the urban side of the region and its peaceful, scenic countryside. Free days were spent wandering through Florence and taking weekend trips to places like Pisa, Siena, Lucca, and the stunning Cinque Terre.

But for Vera, the biggest takeaway wasn’t just the sightseeing.

This experience helped me become even more independent. I made new friends, and I’m so grateful to both families I stayed with for their kindness, patience, and support. They kept me informed, guided me, and encouraged me every step of the way.

Of course, working with young children came with its challenges.

Let’s be honest, preschoolers have their off days! But I even improved my cooking skills—Italy is the perfect place for that, in my opinion.

Her time in Italy was filled with learning, growth, and unforgettable moments.

Sure, there were moments of homesickness, but with open communication and support, everything felt easier.

Vera’s advice to other students?

Take the leap. Pick the country that inspires you and go for it. Be brave, stay focused, be flexible—and most of all, relax and enjoy the ride. It’s going to be amazing.
